"Scrat" - World's Largest Ice Sculpture
Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment will attempt to break the Guinness World Record for World's Largest Tallest Ice Sculpture, With the release of the Ice Age 3 - Dawn of the Dinosaurs Blu-ray disc and DVD, at the opening of the ice skating rink, ICE at Santa Monica, California. The studio unveiled a mammoth ice sculpture of the popular "Scrat" character, and the 48-foot-8-inch sculpture earned a place in the Guiness Book of World Records for the tallest ice sculpture.
A team of artists from Blue Sky Studios devised the sculpture's design, which is said to measure 45 feet in height when complete. Months of preparation went into the logistics. They hired a crack team of 14 sculptors from Ice Bulb LLC to spend four days carving what could be named the world's tallest ice sculpture in an exact likeness of Scrat. Over 133,000 lbs. of ice will be used, gathered across 4 states.
An array of activities will take place on Tuesday evening in celebration of this historical moment. The 8,000 square foot outdoor ice rink will open to the public for free. Here Select scenes from Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs will be screened for all to enjoy. Food, hot cocoa, and goody bags for kids in attendance will be handed out. World Figure Skating Champion Randy Gardner will perform to the “Walk the Dinosaur” song featured in the film. The one and only acorn-loving Scrat will demonstrate his own skating abilities. From October 27 through January 31, 2010, the ice rink will be open Sunday through Thursday, 10am to 10pm, and Friday and Saturday, 10am to midnight. Admission is $10 and includes rental skates. Stand-ups and in-progress check-ins available beginning Saturday, October 24
The current record for the Tallest Ice Sculpture is 40.28 feet and was achieved by Michel Amann (France) in Ski Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. A representative from the Guinness Book of World Records confirm that the gargantuan Scrat sculpture beat the current record a 40-foot-high frozen replica , the world's tallest commercial tower set in 2006.
